...where photography is today and where it’s going..."
Curated by art dealer Ann Priftis
September 16 – October 7 2006

It wiped out the entire city. When it vanished, almost nothing remained…Survivors climbed off their rooftops onto rafts made of debris, drifting into a flooded landscape of putrid rainwater, floating cars, and wrecked houses. Helicopters buzzed overhead, sour faces peering down from the oval windows…It was confirmed. Hurricane Katrina was one of the single worst natural disasters to ever strike American soil.Months later… a photographer – Josh Hailey - Jackson, Mississippi drove in from Mississippi. He parked his car and got out. He felt empty standing there, as if the flood had taken away not just New Orleans but a large chunk of his own anatomy. He aimed his camera and began snapping pictures… snapshots of post-Katrina New Orleans: the old crooked buildings… the exquisite, baroque geometry of balconies… cobblestones and the pink disease of twilight spreading over a fleshy sky…But he missed one key factor.Himself.Josh is haunted. His imagination is like a huge three-story mansion populated by the terrible ghosts of media images from August 2005 – the horror of Katrina: what can only be described, now, by closing his eyes and shaking his head.In the end, Josh gathered all his 35 mm negatives and mutilated them, transforming each snapshot into an aperture of his imagination, creating chaos, destruction, and muted despair.
